The rds_ib_xmit function in net/rds/ib_send.c in the Reliable Datagram Sockets (RDS) protocol implementation in the Linux kernel 3.7.4 and earlier allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG_ON and kernel panic) by establishing an RDS connection with the source IP address equal to the IPoIB interface s own IP address, as demonstrated by rds-ping.
The weakness was released 06/18/2012 by Li Honggang as 822754 as confirmed advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2372 since 04/19/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71245 (VMSA-2013-0015 : VMware ESX updates to third-party libraries), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family VMware ESX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166783 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0287-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at rhn.redhat.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
