Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, leading to memory corruption, aka "HTML Element Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 12/16/2010 by Peter Vreugdenhil with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS10-090 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3346 since 09/14/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1016 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51162 (MS10-090: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2416400)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100094 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-090)).

Applying the patch MS10-090 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10685.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (63558), Tenable (51162), SecurityFocus (BID 45261†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024872†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28640†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-4212, VDB-55757, VDB-55755 and VDB-55754.
