Google Chrome up to 8.0.552.208 parseFontFaceSrc memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Google Chrome up to 8.0.552.208 (Web Browser). This issue affects the function CSSParser::parseFontFaceSrc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The CSSParser::parseFontFaceSrc function in WebCore/css/CSSParser.cpp in WebKit, as used in Google Chrome before 8.0.552.224, Chrome OS before 8.0.552.343, webkitgtk before 1.2.6, and other products does not properly parse Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) token sequences, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted local font, related to "Type Confusion."

The weakness was released 12/21/2010 by Tim Brown as Bug 667025 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4577. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Tim Brown and been published 3 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52620 (Debian DSA-2188-1 : webkit - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118835 (Google Chrome Prior to 8.0.552.224 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 8.0.552.209 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (52620) and Exploit-DB (22406). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 6847, 6848, 6849 and 6851.
