A vulnerability was found in Microsoft WMI Administrative Tools up to 1.1 and classified as very critical. The WMITools ActiveX control in WBEMSingleView.ocx 1.50.1131.0 in Microsoft WMI Administrative Tools 1.1 and earlier in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted argument to the AddContextRef method, possibly an untrusted pointer dereference, aka "Microsoft WMITools ActiveX Control Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 12/22/2010 with WooYun as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3973 since 10/14/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/07/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by WooYun and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53384 (MS11-027: Cumulative Security Update of ActiveX Kill Bits (2508272)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90694 (Microsoft Windows Cumulative Security Update of ActiveX Kill Bits (MS11-027)).
A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11034.
