A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function bcm_connect
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the bcm_connect function in net/can/bcm.c (aka the Broadcast Manager) in the Controller Area Network (CAN) implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36.2 on 64-bit platforms might allow local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a connect operation.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 12/29/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 649695 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3874. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1745 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50825 (Debian DSA-2126-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165548 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:004)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (63042), Tenable (50825), SecurityFocus (BID 44661†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28525†). See VDB-55570, VDB-55569, VDB-55564 and VDB-55563 for similar entries.
