Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This affects the function econet_sendmsg
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the econet_sendmsg function in net/econet/af_econet.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36.2, when an econet address is configured, allows local users to gain privileges by providing a large number of iovec structures.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 12/30/2010 by Jon Oberheide as Bug 644156 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-3848. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Jon Oberheide in ANSI C and been published 9 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1716 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50843 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS / 8.04 LTS / 9.10 / 10.04 LTS / 10.10 : linux, linux-{ec2,source-2.6.15} vulnerabilities (USN-1023-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165549 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:005)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (17787), Tenable (50843), SecurityFocus (BID 45072†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28409†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-55558, VDB-55886, VDB-55883 and VDB-55882. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
