The econet_sendmsg function in net/econet/af_econet.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36.2, when an econet address is configured, allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) via a sendmsg call that specifies a NULL value for the remote address field.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 12/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 644156 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3849. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Dan Rosenberg in ANSI C and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1746 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50825 (Debian DSA-2126-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119077 (Linux Kernel Multiple Vulnerabilities).
