Zend Framework 1.12.0 RC1 Eingabe information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Zend Framework 1.12.0 RC1 (Programming Tool Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation as part of a Eingabe leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Zend_XmlRpc in Zend Framework 1.x before 1.11.12 and 1.12.x before 1.12.0 does not properly handle SimpleXMLElement classes, which allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files or create TCP connections via an external entity reference in a DOCTYPE element in an XML-RPC request, aka an XML external entity (XXE) injection attack.

The bug was discovered 06/18/2012. The weakness was published 06/26/2012 by Kestutis Gudinavicius and Johannes Greil with SEC Consult Unternehmensberatung GmbH as ZF2012-01 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at framework.zend.com. The public release has been coordinated with Zend. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3363 since 06/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at sec-consult.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62571 (FreeBSD : Zend Framework -- Multiple vulnerabilities via XXE injection (ec34d0c2-1799-11e2-b4ab-000c29033c32)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.12.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12900.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (62571) and Exploit-DB (19408). Similar entry is available at 63564.
