A vulnerability was found in GNU gimp 2.6.11 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function gfig_read_parameter_gimp_rgb of the file plug-ins/gfig/gfig-style.c of the component Configuration File. Stack-based buffer overflow in the gfig_read_parameter_gimp_rgb function in plug-ins/gfig/gfig-style.c in the GFIG plugin in GIMP 2.6.11 allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long Foreground field in a plugin configuration file. NOTE: it may be uncommon to obtain a GIMP plugin configuration file from an untrusted source that is separate from the distribution of the plugin itself. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was released 01/03/2011 as Bug 666793 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-4542 since 12/09/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67082 (CentOS 5 : gimp (CESA-2011:0838)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165187 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:005)).
