A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in django up to 1.3 (Content Management System). Affected is some unknown processing of the file django.contrib.auth of the component Password Reset. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The password reset functionality in django.contrib.auth in Django before 1.1.3, 1.2.x before 1.2.4, and 1.3.x before 1.3 beta 1 does not validate the length of a string representing a base36 timestamp, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (resource consumption) via a URL that specifies a large base36 integer.
The weakness was disclosed 01/10/2011 by Paul McMillan as Bug 665373 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4535 since 12/09/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51512 (Fedora 13 : Django-1.2.4-1.fc13 (2011-0096)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
