The do_block_io_op function in (1) drivers/xen/blkback/blkback.c and (2) drivers/xen/blktap/blktap.c in Xen before 3.4.0 for the Linux kernel 2.6.18, and possibly other versions, allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and CPU consumption) via a large production request index to the blkback or blktap back-end drivers. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was shared 01/10/2011 as Bug 656206 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4247. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. A authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51426 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:0004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155552 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel Security, Bug Fix, and Enhancement Update (ELSA-2011-0004)).
