A vulnerability was found in HP OpenView Network Node Manager 7.53 (Network Management Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality in the library ovutil.dll. The manipulation of the argument COOKIE with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in ovutil.dll in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.51 and 7.53 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long COOKIE variable.

The weakness was published 01/13/2011 by SilentSignal with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0264. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/11/2021).

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56843 (HP-UX PHSS_41606 : s700_800 11.X OV NNM7.53 PA-RISC Intermediate Patch 28), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42358 (HP OpenView Network Node Manager Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (HPSBMA02621)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10768.
