Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file nnmRptConfig.exe. The manipulation of the argument text1 with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Buffer overflow in nnmRptConfig.exe in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.51 and 7.53 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long text1 parameter.

The weakness was shared 01/13/2011 by SilentSignal with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0268. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/03/2017).

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56843 (HP-UX PHSS_41606 : s700_800 11.X OV NNM7.53 PA-RISC Intermediate Patch 28), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42358 (HP OpenView Network Node Manager Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (HPSBMA02621)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10529.
