Details
A vulnerability was found in HP OpenView Network Node Manager 7.53 (Network Management Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument this
with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The CGI scripts in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.51 and 7.53 do not properly validate an unspecified parameter, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by using a command string for this parameter s value, related to a "command injection vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 01/13/2011 by SilentSignal with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0271. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/01/2024). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56843 (HP-UX PHSS_41606 : s700_800 11.X OV NNM7.53 PA-RISC Intermediate Patch 28), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42358 (HP OpenView Network Node Manager Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (HPSBMA02621)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10771.
