Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 igb_receive_skb null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function igb_receive_skb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The igb_receive_skb function in drivers/net/igb/igb_main.c in the Intel Gigabit Ethernet (aka igb) subsystem in the Linux kernel before 2.6.34, when Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) and promiscuous mode are enabled but no VLANs are registered, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and panic) and possibly have unspecified other impact via a VLAN tagged frame.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 01/18/2011 as Bug 660188 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4263. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/12/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1765 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68177 (Oracle Linux 6 : kernel (ELSA-2011-0007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118912 (Red Hat Update for Kernel (RHSA-2011:0017)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (68177). The entries 54876, 54636, 56224 and 56205 are related to this item.
