Oracle Fusion Middleware 10.1.3.4 ActiveX Control first memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Oracle Fusion Middleware 10.1.3.4 (Middleware). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation of the argument first with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in the Oracle Document Capture component in Oracle Fusion Middleware 10.1.3.4 and 10.1.3.5 allows remote attackers to affect integrity and availability via unknown vectors related to Import Server. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the January 2011 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from the original researcher that remote attackers can overwrite arbitrary files and execute arbitrary code via a full pathname in the first argument to the WriteJPG method in the NCSECWLib ActiveX control.

The weakness was released 01/19/2011 by Alexandr Polyakov with Oracle (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3599. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Alexandr Polyakov and been published 1 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51873 (Oracle Document Capture Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11280.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64767), Tenable (51873) and Exploit-DB (16052). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 56130, 56128, 56125 and 56124.
