libuser before 0.57 uses a cleartext password value of (1) !! or (2) x for new LDAP user accounts, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain access by specifying one of these values.
The weakness was shared 01/13/2011 (Website). The advisory is shared at fedorahosted.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0002. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119749 (VMware Third Party Component Updates for VMware vCenter Server, vCenter Update Manager (VMSA-2011-0013)).
Upgrading to version 0.50 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be adding authentication. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
