pam_namespace.c in the pam_namespace module in Linux-PAM (aka pam) before 1.1.3 uses the environment of the invoking application or service during execution of the namespace.init script, which might allow local users to gain privileges by running a setuid program that relies on the pam_namespace PAM check, as demonstrated by the sudo program.
The weakness was released 01/24/2011 as Bug 643043 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3853 since 10/08/2010. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50804 (CentOS 5 : pam (CESA-2010:0819)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119031 (VMware ESX SLPD Denial of Service Vulnerability and Security Update for Third-Party Components (VMSA-2011-0004)).
Upgrading to version 0.99.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
