Multiple off-by-one errors in the WW8DopTypography::ReadFromMem function in oowriter in OpenOffice.org (OOo) 2.x and 3.x before 3.3 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted typography information in a Microsoft Word .DOC file that triggers an out-of-bounds write.
The weakness was disclosed 01/26/2011 by Dan Rosenberg with Red Hat as Bug 640954 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-3454. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/13/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51887 (CentOS 4 : openoffice.org / openoffice.org2 (CESA-2011:0181)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155557 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for OpenOffice.org and OpenOffice.org2 (ELSA-2011-0181)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
