A vulnerability was found in Nagios XI Network Monitor 2011R1.9 (Log Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file /nagiosql/admin/checkcommands.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 01/30/2012. The weakness was presented 07/02/2012 by Daniel Compton with NCC Group Research as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Nagios. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
After 6 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 154 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:nagiosql/admin/checkcommands.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version CCM Full Beta eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
