A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (version now known). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Trace Events functionality in the kernel in Microsoft Windows XP SP3 does not properly perform type conversion, which causes integer truncation and insufficient memory allocation and triggers a buffer overflow, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, related to WmiTraceMessageVa, aka "Windows Kernel Integer Truncation Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 02/08/2011 by Nikita Tarakanov (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS11-011 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0045. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Nikita Tarakanov in ANSI C and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51911 (MS11-011: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2393802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90659 (Microsoft Windows Kernel Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS11-011)).
Applying the patch MS11-011 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64927), Tenable (51911) and Exploit-DB (16262). The entry 4231 is related to this item.
