A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft SharePoint 2007/2010/3.0 (Groupware Software). This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation of the argument List with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Reflected). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP2 and SP3 Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2, and SharePoint Foundation 2010 Gold and SP1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via crafted JavaScript elements in a URL, aka "SharePoint Reflected List Parameter Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 07/10/2012 by Yang Yang with Microsoft as MS12-050 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1863 since 03/22/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59913 (MS12-050: Vulnerabilities in SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2695502)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110185 (Microsoft SharePoint Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS12-050)).

Applying the patch MS12-050 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11532.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76710) and Tenable (59913). Similar entries are available at 5532, 5641, 5642 and 5643.
