Details
A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader (Document Reader Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality in the library rt3d.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Bitmap parsing component in rt3d.dll in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 10.x before 10.0.1, 9.x before 9.4.2, and 8.x before 8.2.6 on Windows and Mac OS X allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted image that causes an invalid pointer calculation related to 4/8-bit RLE compression, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-0596, CVE-2011-0598, and CVE-2011-0602.
The weakness was presented 02/10/2011 by Peter Vreugdenhil (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at adobe.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-0599 since 01/19/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51924 (Adobe Acrobat < 10.0.1 / 9.4.2 / 8.2.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB11-03)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118995 (Red Hat Update for Acroread (RHSA-2011:0301)).
Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10835.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51924), SecurityFocus (BID 46220†), Secunia (SA43470†), SecurityTracker (ID 1025033†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29713†). See VDB-56469, VDB-56468, VDB-56467 and VDB-56466 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
