Google Chrome before 9.0.597.94 does not properly handle anonymous blocks, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via unknown vectors that lead to a "stale pointer."
The weakness was presented 02/10/2011 by Martin Barbella (miaubiz) with CERT/CC (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0983 since 02/10/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52029 (Debian DSA-2166-1 : chromium-browser - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118957 (Google Chrome prior to 9.0.597.94 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 8.0.552.209 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com.
