Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 ldm_parse_vmdb input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This affects the function ldm_parse_vmdb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The ldm_parse_vmdb function in fs/partitions/ldm.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.38-rc6-git6 does not validate the VBLK size value in the VMDB structure in an LDM partition table, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and OOPS) via a crafted partition table.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 03/01/2011 by Timo Warns (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at spinics.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1012 since 02/14/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1807 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55686 (SuSE 11.1 Security Update : Linux kernel (SAT Patch Numbers 4884 / 4888 / 4889)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165562 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:026)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65644) and Tenable (55686). Similar entries are available at 52270, 56656, 56654 and 61067.
