Apple iOS up to 4.2 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 5.0.4 and iOS before 4.3, does not properly handle redirects in conjunction with HTTP Basic Authentication, which might allow remote web servers to capture credentials by logging the Authorization HTTP header.

The weakness was disclosed 03/11/2011 by Paul with CERT (Website). The advisory is shared at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-0160. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/30/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52612 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 5.0.4), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119032 (Apple Safari Prior to 5.0.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2011-03-09-2)).

Upgrading to version 4.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65999), Tenable (52612), SecurityFocus (BID 46808†), SecurityTracker (ID 1025182†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31874†). The entries VDB-54832, VDB-56823, VDB-56822 and VDB-56821 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
