IBM DB2 up to 10.1 SQLJ.DB2_INSTALL_JAR path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in IBM DB2 (Database Software). Affected is the function SQLJ.DB2_INSTALL_JAR. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the SQLJ.DB2_INSTALL_JAR stored procedure in IBM DB2 9.1 before FP12, 9.5 through FP9, 9.7 through FP6, 9.8 through FP5, and 10.1 allows remote attackers to replace JAR files via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was presented 07/13/2012 by Martin Rakhmanov with Application Security as swg21600837 as confirmed knowledge base article (IBM Knowledge Base). The advisory is shared for download at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2194 since 04/04/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62701 (IBM DB2 9.7 < Fix Pack 7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19784 (IBM DB2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (IC84712, IC84748, IC84750 )).

Upgrading to version 10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-01.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (62701). See 5689, 5691, 6559 and 6802 for similar entries.
