MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.9 Key Distribution Center do_as_req.c prepare_error_as resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.9 (Network Authentication Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function prepare_error_as of the file do_as_req.c of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Double free vulnerability in the prepare_error_as function in do_as_req.c in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.7 through 1.9, when the PKINIT feature is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via an e_data field containing typed data.

The weakness was released 03/15/2011 with Red Hat as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0284 since 01/03/2011. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/19/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68230 (Oracle Linux 6 : krb5 (ELSA-2011-0356)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks.

A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66101) and Tenable (68230).
