PHP up to 5.1 zip Extension zip_name_locate.c ZIPARCHIVE::FL_UNCHANGED null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in PHP (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function ZIPARCHIVE::FL_UNCHANGED of the file zip_name_locate.c of the component zip Extension. The manipulation of the argument ZIPARCHIVE::FL_UNCHANGED with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The _zip_name_locate function in zip_name_locate.c in the Zip extension in PHP before 5.3.6 does not properly handle a ZIPARCHIVE::FL_UNCHANGED argument, which might allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via an empty ZIP archive that is processed with a (1) locateName or (2) statName operation.

The weakness was disclosed 03/19/2011 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz as Bug 688735 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0421 since 01/11/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75790 (openSUSE Security Update : apache2-mod_php5 (openSUSE-SU-2011:0645-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165191 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:009)).

Upgrading to version 5.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66173), Exploit-DB (17004), Tenable (75790), SecurityFocus (BID 46354†) and OSVDB (0†).
