The cgre_receive_netlink_msg function in daemon/cgrulesengd.c in cgrulesengd in the Control Group Configuration Library (aka libcgroup or libcg) before 0.37.1 does not verify that netlink messages originated in the kernel, which allows local users to bypass intended resource restrictions via a crafted message.
The weakness was presented 03/22/2011 as Bug 680409 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1022 since 02/14/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52691 (Debian DSA-2193-1 : libcgroup - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155459 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libcgroup (ELSA-2011-0320)).
Upgrading to version 0.32.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
