Oracle Secure Backup 10.3.0.3/10.4.0.1 PHP input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Oracle Secure Backup 10.3.0.3/10.4.0.1 (Backup Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component PHP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

PHP before 5.3.9 computes hash values for form parameters without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) by sending many crafted parameters.

The weakness was released 07/17/2012 by Alexander Klink as Patch Day July 2012 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-4885 since 12/21/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by infodox and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78135 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : PHP vulnerability (K13588)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119928 (HP-UX Apache Running Tomcat Servlet Engine Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02741)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11994.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72021), Tenable (78135) and Exploit-DB (18296). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5783, 5697, 5766 and 5728.
