Samba up to 3.2.13 smbfs mount.cifs config

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 3.2.13 (File Transfer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file mount.cifs of the component smbfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a config vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-16. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

smbfs in Samba 3.5.8 and earlier attempts to use (1) mount.cifs to append to the /etc/mtab file and (2) umount.cifs to append to the /etc/mtab.tmp file without first checking whether resource limits would interfere, which allows local users to trigger corruption of the /etc/mtab file via a process with a small RLIMIT_FSIZE value, a related issue to CVE-2011-1089.

The weakness was released 04/09/2011 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 688980 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1678 since 04/09/2011. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.004.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56390 (Ubuntu 10.10 / 11.04 : cifs-utils vulnerabilities (USN-1226-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119665 (CentOS Security Update for samba3x (CESA-2011:1220)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66702) and Tenable (56390). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 51744, 57055, 57054 and 57053.
