Microsoft Excel 2002 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted RealTimeData record, related to a stTopic field, doubly-byte characters, and an incorrect pointer calculation, aka "Excel Record Parsing WriteAV Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 04/12/2011 by Junaid Bohio (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0101. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/02/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53374 (MS11-021 / MS11-022 / MS11-023: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2489279 / 2489283 / 2489293) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110132 (Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS11-021)).

A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10872.
