The SMB client in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 allows remote SMB servers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) SMBv1 or (2) SMBv2 response, aka "SMB Client Response Parsing Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 04/13/2011 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0660. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53376 (MS11-019: Vulnerabilities in SMB Client Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2511455)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90692 (Microsoft SMB Client Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-019)).

A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11056.
