The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2011 by Stephen Fewer with Harmony Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1245. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2086 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53375 (MS11-018: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2497640)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100099 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS11-018)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11038.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66436) and Tenable (53375). The entries 4340, 54584, 56176 and 55988 are pretty similar.
