Novell Moonlight 2.0/2.3.0/2.4/2.31/3.99 Array.Copy race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Novell Moonlight 2.0/2.3.0/2.4/2.31/3.99. Affected is an unknown functionality of the file Array.Copy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in the FastCopy optimization in the Array.Copy method in metadata/icall.c in Mono, when Moonlight 2.x before 2.4.1 or 3.x before 3.99.3 is used, allows remote attackers to trigger a buffer overflow and modify internal data structures, and cause a denial of service (plugin crash) or corrupt the internal state of the security manager, via a crafted media file in which a thread makes a change after a type check but before a copy action.

The weakness was shared 04/13/2011 by Basti (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0990. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59651 (GLSA-201206-13 : Mono: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165189 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:007)).

Upgrading to version 2.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66625), Tenable (59651), SecurityFocus (BID 47208†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31913†).
