A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
drivers/scsi/mpt2sas/mpt2sas_ctl.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.38 and earlier does not validate (1) length and (2) offset values before performing memory copy operations, which might allow local users to gain privileges, cause a denial of service (memory corruption), or obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a crafted ioctl call, related to the _ctl_do_mpt_command and _ctl_diag_read_buffer functions.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 05/03/2011 by Dan Rosenberg (Website). The advisory is shared at patchwork.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-1495 since 03/21/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/05/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1870 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67081 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:0833)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120077 (VMware ESXi 3.5 Several Security Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2012-0006)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67081), SecurityFocus (BID 47185†), Secunia (SA46397†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31530†).
