lsassd in Likewise Open /Enterprise 5.3 before build 7845, Open 6.0 before build 8325, and Enterprise 6.0 before build 178, as distributed in VMware ESXi 4.1 and ESX 4.1 and possibly other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via an Active Directory login attempt that provides a username containing an invalid byte sequence.

The weakness was published 05/03/2011 with Vmware (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1786. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53592 (VMSA-2011-0007 : VMware ESXi and ESX Denial of Service and third-party updates for Likewise components and ESX Service Console), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family VMware ESX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216007 (VMWare ESXi 4.1.0 Patch Release ESXi410-201104001 Missing (KB1035111)).

Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
