Adobe Audition 3.0/3.0.1 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Adobe Audition 3.0/3.0.1. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in Adobe Audition 3.0.1 and earlier allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via crafted data in unspecified fields in the TRKM chunk in an Audition Session (aka .ses) file, related to inconsistent use of character data types.

The weakness was presented 05/16/2011 by Core Security with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0615 since 01/20/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/07/2021).

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 54606 (Adobe Audition < CS5.5 Multiple SES Session File Processing Overflows (APSB11-10)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11509.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67454) and Tenable (54606). See 57457 for similar entry.
