ViewVC before 1.1.11 allows remote attackers to bypass the cvsdb row_limit configuration setting, and consequently conduct resource-consumption attacks, via the limit parameter, as demonstrated by a "query revision history" request.
The weakness was presented 05/23/2011 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at viewvc.tigris.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-5024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75767 (openSUSE Security Update : viewvc (openSUSE-SU-2011:0529-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165195 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:010)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
