rdesktop up to 1.6.0 disk.c disk_create path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in rdesktop up to 1.6.0 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function disk_create of the file disk.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The software uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the software does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the disk_create function in disk.c in rdesktop before 1.7.0, when disk redirection is enabled, allows remote RDP servers to read or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in a pathname.

The weakness was shared 05/24/2011 by Noam Rathaus as Bug 676252 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1595. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68274 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : rdesktop (ELSA-2011-0506)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165195 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:010)).

Upgrading to version 1.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66852) and Tenable (68274). The entries 61045, 61044, 57515 and 57504 are related to this item.
