The helper application in Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client (formerly AnyConnect VPN Client) before 2.5.3041, and 3.0.x before 3.0.629, on Linux and Mac OS X downloads a client executable file (vpndownloader.exe) without verifying its authenticity, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the url property to a Java applet, aka Bug ID CSCsy05934.
The weakness was published 06/02/2011 by iDefense Labs with iDEFENSE Labs as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2040 since 05/10/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. Upgrading to version 2.4.0202 eliminates this vulnerability.
