Integer underflow in the visual_read function in wiretap/visual.c in Wireshark 1.2.x before 1.2.17 and 1.4.x before 1.4.7 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed Visual Networks file that triggers a heap-based buffer over-read.
The weakness was released 06/06/2011 by Huzaifa Sidhpurwala as Bug 710109 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2175. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58849 (CentOS 6 : wireshark (CESA-2012:0509)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120942 (CentOS Security Update for Wireshark (CESA-2013:0125)).
Upgrading to version 1.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
