The weakness was presented 06/16/2011 by Luigi Auriemma with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-2111. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/13/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55142 (Shockwave Player < 11.6.0.626 (APSB11-17)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119333 (Adobe Shockwave Player Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB11-17)).

Upgrading to version 8.0.196 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11227.
