A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.0.3.18 (Firewall Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the file spywall/pbcontrol.php. The manipulation of the argument filename
with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. The management console in Symantec Web Gateway 5.0.x before 5.0.3.18 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via crafted input to application scripts.
The weakness was shared 07/20/2012 by muts with Offensive Security as SYM12-011 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2953 since 05/30/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by muts and been published 4 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/pbcontrol.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12663 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Security Issues (SYM12-011)).
Upgrading to version 5.0.0.438 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12630.
