Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in SquirrelMail 1.4.21 and earlier allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors involving (1) drop-down selection lists, (2) the > (greater than) character in the SquirrelSpell spellchecking plugin, and (3) errors associated with the Index Order (aka options_order) page.
The weakness was released 07/14/2011 as Bug 720694 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-4555 since 12/16/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57864 (CentOS 4 / 5 : squirrelmail (CESA-2012:0103)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120040 (CentOS Security Update for SquirrelMail(CESA-2012:0103)).
