A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in libpng up to 1.2.37 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function png_format_buffer of the file pngerror.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a off-by-one vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-193. The png_format_buffer function in pngerror.c in libpng 1.0.x before 1.0.55, 1.2.x before 1.2.45, 1.4.x before 1.4.8, and 1.5.x before 1.5.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted PNG image that triggers an out-of-bounds read during the copying of error-message data. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of a CVE-2004-0421 regression. NOTE: this is called an off-by-one error by some sources.

The weakness was disclosed 07/17/2011 as Bug 717084 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-2501 since 06/15/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68318 (Oracle Linux 6 : libpng (ELSA-2011-1105)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155726 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libpng (ELSA-2011-1105)).

Upgrading to version 1.2.38 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (68517) and Tenable (68318). The entries 58408, 57945, 57944 and 57943 are pretty similar.
