Heap-based buffer overflow in the DemuxAudioSipr function in real.c in the RealMedia demuxer in VideoLAN VLC media player 1.1.x before 1.1.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted Real Media file.

The weakness was released 07/26/2011 by Hossein Lotfi (Website). The advisory is shared for download at videolan.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-2587. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55608 (VLC Media Player 0.5.0 to 1.1.10 Multiple Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119397 (VLC Media Player, RealMedia and AVI File Parsing Vulnerabilities (VideoLAN-SA-1105, VideoLAN-SA-1106)).

Upgrading to version 1.1.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
