Apple QuickTime up to 7.67.75.0 numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Apple QuickTime (Multimedia Player Software). This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer signedness error in Apple QuickTime before 7.7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted PnSize opcode in a PICT file that triggers a stack-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was presented 08/15/2011 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-0257 since 12/23/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/18/2021).

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55763 (QuickTime < 7.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119481 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2011-08-03-1)).

Upgrading to version 7.5.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11870.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69178), Exploit-DB (17777), Tenable (55763), SecurityFocus (BID 49144†) and OSVDB (74687†). See VDB-4387, VDB-58292, VDB-58189 and VDB-58188 for similar entries.
