Mozilla Firefox prior 1.0 appendChild code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function appendChild. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The appendChild function in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.20, Thunderbird 3.x before 3.1.12, SeaMonkey 2.x, and possibly other products does not properly handle DOM objects, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors that lead to dereferencing of a "dangling pointer."

The weakness was released 08/18/2011 by regenrecht as Bug 648065 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-2378. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/18/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55862 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2011:1164)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119512 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2011:1164)).

Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11458.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69232) and Tenable (55862). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 58311, 58310, 58309 and 58308.
